We’re excited to kick off BIO2, a 4-year HORIZON EUROPE project under the Farm2Fork programme, committed to replacing contentious inputs in organic farming with sustainable, bio-based alternatives. Even in organic farming, many current tools – like copper sprays, conventional composts, or synthetic antibiotics – still pose risks to soil, biodiversity, and health.
BIO2 is tackling this challenge head-on by transforming underused natural resources into scalable solutions — co-developed and tested with organic farmers across Europe.
What will BIO2 deliver?
Microbial crop protection agents — like probiotics for plants, protected by algae and calcium phosphate coatings for longer field activity.
- Bio-based fertilizers — made from fish side-streams, seaweed, recycled urine, and beneficial microbes.
- Natural animal health products — including non-living mycobacteria and corynebacteria that act like vaccines to strengthen immunity, and bark extracts with antiparasitic properties.
The project began on May 1, 2025, with an energizing kick-off meeting in Bologna (June 19–20) hosted by our coordinator Alessio Adamiano
from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and co-organized by Kinga Zór from Innovation Acta S.r.l.
